It happens to the best of us, the dreaded mind block. At some point in a graphic designer’s career, the flow of ideas can become repetitive or stale. Freelance or permanent, it’s worth remembering these 7 tips to keep your creative juices in sync…
- CAPTURE IT
Whether it’s outside, inside, on the roof, in the sky, on the wall. If it inspires you, take a photo of it and save it in a collection. Memories can inspire you to create original, unique design.
- GET INVOLVED
Especially if you’re freelancing, joining an online designers’ group can keep you up to date with the latest trends. It’s also a great chance to get feedback on your work to improve yourself and share ideas!
- PUT PEN TO PAPER
Ideas can hit you when you least expect it! Carry a sketch book wherever you go to note down and work on ideas sooner rather than later.
- TRAVEL
Experiencing new places and new cultures can open your mind and allow creative thinking in new directions.
- PROJECTS FOR FUN
Create a fake brand, design logos, brochures, websites, make it as whacky as you want and let your mind run wild! Working on similar briefs over and over can limit your creative thinking and lead to repetitive designs.
- OLDIES BUT GOODIES
Keep all of your old designs and rework them to improve your ideas and skills. You’ll be surprised how quickly your creativity can change over time!
- BLOGS ‘N’ BOOKS
We’re in the era where access to information has never been easier. Utilise the internet, read blogs, browse graphic design pages. But never forget the power of a good book, use all the senses by getting hold of a proper chunk of bound paper!
